Valerie Scannura has been teaching and performing flamenco and Spanish dance for over twenty-five years.  She is a graduate of the National Ballet School’s Teacher Training Program and has vast experience teaching and choreographing for her own company the renowned Ritmo Flamenco Dance and Music Ensemble.  Formed in 1995 with Roger Scannura who is her husband and musical director, Ritmo Flamenco has performed in festivals and concerts worldwide.   She has been traveling to Spain since 1992 to train and establish an on-going relationship with teachers in Jerez and Madrid.  She has also accompanied her students there to study at the source.

Highlights of Ritmo Flamenco’s performance career are being invited to perform twice in the Malta International Arts Festival.  They have presented new works in several Fringe Festivals in Toronto in the 1990’s and have had critical success with their own self-produced concerts.  Valerie has been sought out as a choreographer for professional dance institutions such as the Quinte Ballet School of Canada and has created works for performing arts high school Cawthra Secondary School as well as guest teaching for numerous schools in Ontario.  Ritmo Flamenco has performed in several prominent festivals in North America such as:   Luminato , the Toronto Downtown Jazz Festival, and Harbourfront Center.

She has received support for her productions from the Ontario Arts Council and the Toronto Arts Council to produce “Sueno de Jerez”  (2001) and “Cry – Memoria de Vida (2003). Other concerts are:  Noche Flamenca performed at the Al Green Theater in 2005,2006 and in 2007 in Belleville at the Empire Theater.  They mounted “Sangre Flamenca” in 2009 at the Winchester St. Theater Ritmo Flamenco’s most recent show Vida Flamenca was performed at the Al Green Theater to a full house in April 2012.  Their recent tours have taken from 2009 to the present have taken them to Mexico, the US in support of Roger Scannura’s newest CD Vida Flamenca.
